He had already gained international recognition for the original and elegant expressionism of the TWA passenger terminal in New York and the Dulles International Airport near Washington DC.<br \/>\nThe object of his design, as he himself pointed out, was to combine the best functional solution and to create a building that would be representative of 20th century technology and express the Greek spirit as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gktizein.gr\/blog\/?attachment_id=2297\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2297\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2297 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/gktizein.gr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/75.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"211\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gktizein.gr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/75.jpg 360w, https:\/\/gktizein.gr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/75-300x176.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gktizein.gr\/blog\/?attachment_id=2300\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2300\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2300\" src=\"http:\/\/gktizein.gr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/75c-150x125.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"125\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TEXT\"><br \/>\n<strong>Saarinen<\/strong> was so successful in achieving this goal that his building transcended its utilitarian-technological nature and functioned symbolically as the gateway to Athens and to modern Greece.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TEXT\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gktizein.gr\/blog\/?attachment_id=2301\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2301\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2301\" src=\"http:\/\/gktizein.gr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/75d-150x81.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"81\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TEXT\">The building was laid out as follows: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"TEXT\">at the entrance level were the check-in booths, customs inspection, shops and a balcony with restaurants that was also open to the transit lounge, <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"TEXT\">the mezzanine housed the foreign exchange services, customs offices, etc, on the runway level was the splendid transit lounge, with an internal height of three floors, and the departure gates <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"TEXT\">and in the basement were the luggage handling facilities, and the airport\u2019s operating services. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"TEXT\">The large projecting upper floors included restaurants and the roof overlooked the runways and the Saronic Gulf and was popular among passengers and visitors alike. On an intervening floor was the VIP lounge, administration offices, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gktizein.gr\/blog\/?attachment_id=2302\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2302\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2302 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/gktizein.gr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/75e.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gktizein.gr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/75e.jpg 360w, https:\/\/gktizein.gr\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/75e-300x170.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TEXT\">The dynamic and plastic form of the building was particularly <strong>elegant<\/strong>. It was built of pre-stressed, bare concrete permitting the creation of large openings and projections. The fa\u00e7ade overlooking the airport is divided into five parts, supported on large piers and crowned with two parallel projections.
