After my recent olive grove/olive oil manufacturing explorations in the Peloponnese, I decided to spend some more time in the rugged mainland part of Greece, called the Peloponnese. The area is rich in culinary and cultural history. It’s also the area of Greece that my ancestors are from. So one Saturday morning, a group of us piled into several cars and made the two hour drive to Porto Heli, a small peninsula in the northeast Peloponnese. The area is called the Greek Riviera,

Το Ευπαλίνειο Όρυγμα στη Σάμο

Επίτευγμα Μηχανικής θεωρείται η κατασκευή του Αρχαίου αυτού υδραγωγείου. Αξίζει κανείς να αφιερώσει χρόνο να δει αυτό το βίντεο. Το έργο, καλείται Ευπαλίνειο Όρυγμα από το όνομα του Μηχανικού του, του Ευπαλίνη.

Το πιο χρήσιμο έργο λοιπόν, του τύραννου της Σάμου, Πολυκράτη, ήταν το υδραγωγείο με τη θαυμαστή σήραγγα μήκους 1.036 μέτρων που διαπερνά το βουνό και προκαλεί δέος ακόμα και σήμερα: Τη σχεδίασε και την ολοκλήρωσε ο Ευπαλίνος από τα Μέγαρα.

Υπολόγισε τόσο σωστά την «πορεία» της, ώστε τα δυο συνεργεία που ξεκίνησαν ταυτόχρονα από τις δυο άκρες του βουνού, συναντήθηκαν κάπου στη μέση, με απόκλιση γύρω στα 60 εκατοστά του μέτρου. Είναι το ονομαστό «Ευπαλίνειο όρυγμα» που κατασκευάστηκε τον ΣΤ’ π.Χ. αιώνα και σώζεται ακόμα.

Greece, is one of the most beautiful places in the world, with unique ancient monuments. At Peloponnese region can anyone visit: The Ancient Theatre of Epidavros, The Ancient Olympia the place Olympic Games were born, Ancient Corinth, Sparta, Mycines, Tyrintha etc, and stay at the place where the science born.

Acropolis of Athens

While I watch this video I feel like I have to fall on my knees and bow my head in respect to Iktinos, Kallikratis and Fidias as well as to all the people who contributed to the creation of this wonder. Harmony and perfection in each and every line. I feel the need to refer to Acropolis and its monument and to some of their very specific characteristics. We hope the spark of their glory illuminates our minds and  reveals for us the way to paths unapproached for centuries.
